Brian is ON HIS FEET !!!

Posted in Recovery updates at 10:15 am by Barbara (Gibson) Horanoff

Greetings from the long, lost updater!!!So sorry to be so long in getting a posting. I tried a couple of weeks ago and then the computer wigged out on me and ate the whole passage. So anyway…Brian is ON HIS FEET !!!The therapists have released him to walk around the house as much as his legs will carry him, so that he builds up strength in the process. He was able to walk recently to the end of the driveway and back and even snuck up the stairs while no one was looking!! (He got in trouble for that one…).So, prayers are being answered and we continue to be grateful to all who have helped him get this far without some very big worries. He is now looking into what’s out there to help him get back to work and there are some wonderful agencies to assist in this in all kinds of ways. The therapists are also working on his individual fingers now as his overall grip is much improved through the therapy done so far. He is still going there three times a week and exercising at home. Spring is coming and they are getting geared up to get out in the barn. They decided to save money by not heating the two buildings all winter, so they’ve been in the house, mostly. Still we’ve well used the ramps all through this time.So happy spring!! Hope to see you all soon as the weather breaks and we all step back out from the winter. Blessings to you.

Love, Barb

Getting stronger every day!

Posted in Recovery updates at 8:23 am by Barbara (Gibson) Horanoff

Hello and Peace to all,

Things have been so busy, but I just wanted to update everyone I could.  Brian has been getting stronger daily.  He can now hold the weights he’s lifting in his hands instead of having to have them wrapped in and his whole body is strengthening each day.  He got pneumonia just before the holidays — all that lazing around he does — and it set him back.  We didn’t get any steps since that last 14 or so in November.  But he’s been excercising and going to therapy 3 days a week.  Then we did some practicing one day about a week ago, standing one day with a wheelchair behind and a walker in front and he was able to steady himself on his legs for a minute or so- no hands, even.  The next day he went into therapy and told them [what he accomplished], and they said “get the walker!”  That day he estimates he pushed out over a hundred steps!!  And he did it again this week one day.

So he’s getting there.  He says he plans to be on a cane by spring!

Love, Barb

Holiday wishes and gratitude to all

Posted in Recovery updates, Activities at 9:14 am by Barbara (Gibson) Horanoff

Wow!

To everyone involved, making donations, praying, planning, driving, constructing, cleaning, purchasing, pleading with companies, imploring their bosses, hauling, kissing, hugging, worrying, visiting, paying out of their own pocket, generally coming through and finally showing up in the true and pure spirit of love, we thank you for rekindling the sense of decency and faith in friendship and humanity for all those involved.

Many were moved by the outreach.  How beautiful for this to take place during the Christmas season as the power of it will linger in our hearts for some time.  There were so many highlights, not the least of which, for me, was watching Brian dancing in his power wheelchair at the party.  He’s already come such a long way.

You, our friends and family, have lifted us up in every sense of the word over these months.  Success is measured in many ways. Our family is thankful beyond measure.

Merry Christmas,
Love, Barb

Brian’s first week home

Posted in Recovery updates at 9:52 am by Barbara (Gibson) Horanoff

Brian and Sam are trying to get into some kind of routine and actually experiencing some medical issues today, but are going down to University for an evaluation appointment today anyway, so hopefully that will be taken care of.  Up until yesterday he was really enjoying being back at home base and the holiday was really nice this year for us all.

Caring for Brian at home at this stage is time consuming. Please keep them in prayer, as you have.

Brian is coming home!

Posted in Recovery updates at 9:46 pm by Barbara (Gibson) Horanoff

Two-1/2 months after —- Brian will be coming home on Wednesday. Two-1/2 months after — we have plenty to be thankful for. Thanks to all for all the support during these months. The rehab will continue daily during the week for some time. And we don’t exactly know how any of it is going to go from here. But we’re ready to have him home and he’s ready to be there. And we’re thankful for twenty steps and hands that are working better each day.

Revised update from Barb

And…

Just as I finished the email update, I got a call from Sam– about 11:00 pm - just leaving from Kernan.  Brian says he took 14 steps with a walker today. He says they were ugly — but he counted ‘em.

Update from Barb

Brian’s new “home” date is November 21st and he is getting very eager to make a break for it.  Many of the good buddies he made at Kernan have already left, especially his friend from Churchville, Rob  He left last Friday and Brian says he’s ready now, too  So we’re praying for a good week of therapy and that they don’t move him back another week  We do expect him to be home in time for the benefit [concert].  As of now, he’s been up on his own strength for a minute, with a little help balancing and getting fully up.  Once up, he’s been able to put weight now on both legs.  He balances on the parallel bars.  He’s picking up weight again — back up over 150.  I’m thinking that’s the muscle increasing.  ”Cause it’s definately doing that!

I hear Brian took two steps in the walking machine on his own strength. I’m heading out today to get the ‘real’ scoop. I think he’s swimming today.

I saw Brian, with the help of the parallel bars, pull up to a stand, hold there a minute and take a step today, on his own legs. Miles to go, but what a gift!
